"Norwich – The Connecticut Tigers announced today that General Manager Andrew Weber will step down at the end of this month, and Vice President of Operations C.J. Knudsen will replace Weber as vice president and general manager.

Weber has been with the team for four years, and led the effort to move to Norwich at the start of the 2010 baseball season. The late move that spring hurt the ability to sell tickets and sponsorships, but this summer, the Tigers ranked fourth in the nation in all levels of minor league baseball in improved attendance.

Weber called it a "tough and bittersweet decision," but felt it was time to move on and seek a new position in baseball.

"I do want to stay in baseball," Weber said. "We'll see what opportunities come my way. It has been an absolute pleasure here. The last two years have been great here. I know that with our staff, it's going to be awesome and will continue to grow."

Knudsen joined the Tigers with the team's move to Norwich after having spent 10 years as general manager of the Vermont Lake Monsters in the New York-Penn League. He has worked for 17 years in the league in which the Tigers play.

Eric Knighton has been promoted to vice president and assistant general manager."

This discussion came up a couple of times on YES Yankee telecasts with no clear consensus. His regular season stats are:

17 seasons with six teams. 231 HRS, 1120 RBIs, 404 SBs, BA .286 and 2723 hits.

Assuming he get 3000 hits, which seems to be a threshold for induction, is his ticket punched for Cooperstown?
My guess is yes but I don't "think" of him as a HOFer but rather a "good" player who compiled goods stats over a long career.

Does the same then apply to Jim Thome or do we view someone with over 600 HRs differently? Oddly with Thome and the absence of any steroids use in his past the answer for me is yes and his ticket is punched.

that's Antoan Richardson aka Flash who played for the Defenders and made his MLBB debut yesterday with the Braves. AR singled in his first at bat off a "brand name" pitcher, Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers.
Flash was a big fan fav at Dodd and had a devoted following here on the blog; especially AR fan who shared many pics of him with me including the above screen shot. You guys must have been pumped for hours after!!!
Many thanks to AR fan for giving me the heads up on Flash's hit earlier today as I totally lost track of his callup in all the post storm Irene fun around here.

Navs win 4-1 to remain in first place...

with a one game lead with one game left in the regular season. Been awhile since I've been able to type that sentence as the Tigers win tonight beating Lowell on Norwich Navigator night. A three run bottom of the sixth was the difference in the game as Tyler Collins and Dean Green doubled in runs and aaron Westlake singled in another for a 3-0 CT lead. The Spinners scored a run on a wild pitch in the eight but Westlake singled in a run in the bottom half to get the run back.
Wilsen Palacios (5-5) pitched 7 strong innings striking out 8 and Jeff Barfiled threw a 1-2-3 9th for his fifth save.
The division championship comes down to Sunday's game. A Tiger win and a Vermont loss means the Tigers win the division. If both teams lose Sunday the Tigers win the division and if the Tigers lose and the Lake Monsters win, the season ends for the Tigers based on the regular season head to head series between the two teams which favors Vermont.

Misc fan notes: Great seeing that Tater statue back in front of Dodd...it looks great! The Navigators uniform they came up with was pretty good. It reminded me of the purple vests they played in on Sundays only over the green t-shirts they worn then for those games...not bad. Great seeing those Navigators caps as well on the players.

Very well run auction with the players presenting their jerseys to the auction winners on field after the game.
Lots of folks dug deep into their closets for Navs stuff to wear..nice to see.

I went with the 2002 home jersey worn by Mitch Jones that I worn to the Defenders playoff games in 2009. For the cap I went with the 1996 promo cap that I'm wearing at the top of this page.

What to wear...what to wear...

for the Norwich Navigators promo tonight.... and I'm talking about which game worn Navs (Yankees) uniform jersey from my collection to wear...so many choices...the ugly away uniform? the rarely worn mesh one?..the Sunday only purple vest?..the much sought after pin stripe vest...the classic purple pin stripe home jersey?...what else is in that closet and I've haven't even considered which cap yet....?

Anyway the refurbished Tater statue will be repositioned in front of Dodd wearing CT Tiger colors after spending the last five years or so banished to the corner of the old Tator playground behind the picnic pavilion. The statue will not be on a pedestal as before. Nice job by the Tigers front office bringing it back. THANKS!!
The players will be wearing Navs caps and jerseys tonight. I've been given to understand that these a not reproductions of an original Navigator uniforms and caps but a hybrid of some sorts so we'll see. The uniforms will be auctioned off.

The Tigers are in first place by a game over the Vermont Lake Monsters in their division with two games left in the regular season. Go Tigers!

the approaching Armageddon is the postponement of the Norwich Navigators promotion night that was scheduled for tonight. The game between Vermont and CT has been moved up to 1:05 this afternoon from 7:05 but the promo is pushed back to Sat. Sept 3nd which enables me to attend.
Props to the front office for using the correct vintage logo of the Gators on the scoreboard and not the bastardized "Giants" Gators version.

to the tune of 4 errors and a run scoring wild pitch as the Tigers win their fifth straight and climb a game over .500. Tigers jumped out to a quick lead in the first as PJ Polk reached on an error, stole second went to third on a Dean Green single (2 for 3)and came home on a wild pitch.
Tigers starter Tom Collier held Aberdeen scoreless thru his six innings of work allowing just 3 hits while striking out 6. Collier gave way to reliever Scott Green who loaded the bases with no outs on a single, walk and HBP before being pulled for Jeff Barfield. Barfield (2-2) gave up a sac fly which resulted in a double play for the Birds lone run and induced a ground ball to get out of the jam.
The Tigers in the bottom of the seventh loaded the bases with no outs on a Green walk, an Aaron Westlake single and Jeff Holm's attempt at a sac bunt turned into a single. The fielding follies on the left side of the IronBirds infield then committed three errors resulting in four runs for a 5-1 lead.

Misc fan notes: Many thanks for a tidy 2 hour and 15 minute or so game time; usually the Yankees-Red Sox are cruising into the top of the fifth inning at that mark in their games...

About 50 or so dogs on hand for "Bark in the Park" day at Dodd...wierd hearing barking at Dodd during the game...

Tigers hang on and win 4-3 tonight...

over the Aberdeen IronBirds at Dodd. Matt Crouse (4-1) pitched 6+ strong innings yo earn his fourth straight victory. The Tigers scored on an error in the second inning to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
Connecticut tacked on three runs in the third on a Tyler Collins (2-4) RBI single, a Den Green sac fly and an Arron Westlake RBI single to make in 4-0 Tigers. The baby Birds of Baltimore scored a pair of runs in the seventh. The first Ironbird run was doubled in by Ryan Zrenda of Old Lyme, CT. Zrenda, a Brown grad, was just signed by Baltimore as a minor league free agent earlier this week. The double was his first pro hit in his second game. He had a large cheering section on hand.
Melvin Mercedes (save, 2) allowed a run in the top of the ninth to make the score 4-3 to wrap up the game in just over two hours.

of NYPL All-Star selected Brennan Smith and an explosive Tiger line up. Smith went 7 innings pitched allowing just three hits and striking out 5 as he improves to 2-3 while lowing his ERA to an impressive 2.10.
The Tigers lineup broke out the bats tonight lead by the Tigers other All-Star selection Dean Green who hit two homers, a solo shot and a two run homer to pace the CT attack. Green now has 6 homers on the season and is batting .366. Eugenio Suarz and Tyler Collins each went 2 for 4 with a double, with Collins driving in two runs and Suarz one. Chad Wright also went 2 for 4 with a double.
CT improves their record to 23-28 as they try to chase down Vermont for the division lead.

Misc fan notes: Great to be back at Dodd! Good catching up with GM Andrew Weber as he caught me up with the latest news and the great scuucess of Al Kaline Day earlier thise week. The Norwich Navigators tribute night on August 27th sounds special!

two thousandth post of greg's connecticut defenders/tigers blog. An earlier version, "minor (baseball) details" which is found under the link to the right titled "My 2005 Norwich Navigators blog" debuted on July 8, 2005 and logged 94 posts before giving way to this current version. This edition was created on Sunday October 16, 2005 to coincide with the franchise name change from the "Norwich Navigators" to the "Connecticut Defenders."

Along the way we've seen a couple of different owners, several GMs, the very real prospect of Dodd baseball ending in 2009, a subsequent league change, a playoff run (at last in '09) and another that fell just short on the last day of the 2010 season. We've seen some Norwich/Connecticut players progress to the majors to become household names and witnessed the ends of baseball careers. I've made friends in the stands, on the field, up on the concourse and in the press box. It continues to be fun ride all these years and posts later.

Having said all that; it's my intention to scale back the blog. Without boring everyone with details, work and every day life are placing a premium on my time like never before. Up until this year the blog was pretty much a 365 day operation with game updates, pics and other topical stuff. I'll still be posting but not with the frequency of past years. I'll post game recaps of games I see at Dodd and will put up some pics along the way but once the season ends the blog will be pretty much in dry dock. Feel free to look in and post and I will post from time to time but I want to provide everyone the courtesy of an explaination as to why you might be staring at the same pic for a week or so.
Thanks for YOUR time all these seasons and making this part of your routine. The blog WILL continue...

at Dodd. Tyler Collins second solo homer of the game with two outs in the 12th was the game winner. Eugenio Suarez's three run homer in the 5th gave the Tigers a brief 3-2 lead. Collins homer in the sixth tied in up at 4-4.
Nick Avila (2-0) threw 3 innings of one hit ball to earn the victory.

Misc fan notes: Good to be back at Dodd...seems like it's been forever! Adam estlake made his pro debut at first and went 1 for 6.

at Dodd to even their record at 16-16 and are just a half game out of first place. In the opener Luis Sanz (3-2) pitched a complete game allowing 4 hits and striking out 9 as the Tigers used a three run second inning to send them to a 4-2 win.
In the nightcap Jason King knocked in a pair of run as the Tigers on 3-2. Scott Green earned his first victoty in relief and Daniel Bennett got his 7th save.

Wild one with Tri-City as Tigers win 15-9..

in 13 innings on the road against the ValleyCats. The game was tied after 9 innings 7-7. The Tigers scored two runs in the 12th on Jeff Holm's two run homer, his third of the season but the home team tied it up at 9-9 in the bottom half of the innings. The Tigers exploded for 6 runs in the 13th with four runs on Jason King's grand slam. The homer was King's fifth of the season.
Dean Green( 3 for 7) added a homer and Zach Maggard went 4 for 7 with three RBIs.
Nick Avila picked up his first win of the season in relief.

for recognizing an important piece of Norwich baseball history, the Tater the Gator statue that stood in front of Dodd Stadium from 1995-2005. The Tater statue has been plucked from it's ignominious resting spot in the back corner of the old Dodd playground and is currently awaiting a much needed refurnishing.
I've mentioned the blight of the old statue in previous posts on 6/12/10 and April 27 of this year and I'm thrilled that the statue is coming back; this time in Tigers colors. In my mind's eye I'll always remember the purple and green color scheme (as pictured here) and the countless kids who had their pictures taken by it.
This is another great example of the CT Tigers front office extending themselves to the community. Many thanks!!

Tigers win 5-3 and there's a new Eugenio in town....

or "Eugene" as the Hondo Hurricane and I used to call (affectionately) Eugenio Velez of the Connecticut Defenders and later on the San Francisco Giants and his name is Eugenio Suarez. The Tigers shortstop went 4 for 4 tonight scoring 2 runs and delivering the big blow of the game a two run triple in the third inning to give the Tigers a then 3-0 lead. CT takes the rubber game of the three game set against the Brooklyn Cyclones at Dodd tonight before 1200+ fans.

Tigers scored in the first as PJ Polk and Suarez singled to start the game. Polk would be erased at third on an attempted double steal, however Suarez would steal third later in the inning and score on a the catcher's throwing error to third.
The Tigers would add a run in the fifth on another Brooklyn error and a run in the sixth on a wild pitch.

Wilsen Palacios pitched a gutty 6.1 innings regularly hitting 90-92 miles per hour on the scoreboard radar gun and earned the win to even his record at 1-1.
Rayni Guichardo out the final two outs in a big spot in the 7th inning. Pedro Perez pitched in and out of trouble in the 8th inning. Daniel Bennett picked up his fifth save in the ninth inning.

Jason Green, Matt Perry, and Edwin Gomez had two hits each in the ball game as the Tigers improve to 10-12 n the standing before going on a long road trip that takes them to Mahoning Valley, Hudson Valley and Tri-City before returning to Dodd next Thursday with a double header against Tri-City.

Misc fan notes: First, great seeing Tom back at his station and off the DL; you were missed! Nice summer night; wish more folks were in the stands however attendance is trending ahead of last season and you can sense bricks being put in place....

this afternoon at Dodd. Jason King's third inning solo homer was the difference in the ball game. King's homer was his second of the season and topped off a 3 for 3 afternoon for him. King's blast enabled Luis Sanz (5 IP) to even his record at 2-2. Dan Bennett picked up his fourth save of the season.
Chad Wright had a RBI single in the second inning to give the Tigers a 1-0. CT looks to take the rubber game of the three game series versus Brooklyn tomorrow at Dodd.

with a run in the 8th inning off reliever Fernardo Celis (0-2) to break a 2-2 tie. Tigers scored both their runs in the second courtesy of Jeff Holm's second homer of the year with a runner aboard. It was Holm's second homer in as many games. Tyler Barrett stared for CT and was relieved by Ryan Woolley. CT with it's third consecutive loss falls to 8-12 before 1200 fans.

thanks to Javier Azcona's one out solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. The blast earned the Tigers a split of the two game series with Lowell at Dodd. The teams continue the home and home series tomorrow in Lowell with another two game set.
Azcona also started the Tigers first rally of the game in the third with CT down 1-0 as he tripled to the right field corned and then scored and a RBI ground out by PJ Polk. Jason King followed with a RBI single to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.
Luis Sanz started for the Tigers and pitched 5 innings. Ryan Woolley gave up a run in his two innings of work. Clemente Mendoza pitched the last two innings for the Tigers and gets the win before 1200+ fans.

Misc fan notes: Connecticut native and former Vanderbilt catcher Curtis Casali made his pro debut with the Tigers and doubled in four plate appearances.

Speaking of mind numbing, the Tigers scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth thanks in part to six wild pitches uncorked by Lowell reliever Braden Kapteyn and another by the pitcher who finally closed out the game Andrew Jones.

Starter Crouse threw a tidy 5.1 IP allowing 5 hits to improve to 1-1 on the season with a 1.29 ERA. RF Les Smith made great catch to end the 3th inning resulting in a double play to end the inning as the runner on first was doubled off. Alexander Nunez also had a defensive gem to end the fourth inning on shallow popup to right field.
The Tigers had five players with two hits each: Chad Wright, PJ Polk, Jason King (2 RBIs), Dean Green and Les Smith.
Dan Bennett pitched the 9th to earn his second save as CT salvaged one game of the three game set from Vermont. The Lowell Spinners come into town for a pair of games staring tomorrow.

Misc fan notes: GET WELL TOM!! Tom, the long time Dodd elevator gatekeeper fell ill Wednesday night at the game. Sounds like he'll be on the DL for a little bit but he is on the mend and hopefully will be back soon. Rest up buddy and pound some liquids!

Old friend Alexander Nunez is back with the Tigers. Nunez was the everyday 2B last season.
Tigers are currently on the short end of a see-saw 8-7 ballgame headed into the 9th. Tigers starter Wilsen Palacios was out of the game before the first inning was over. VT dropped a two out popup with the bases loaded as the Tigers rallied to take a 6-3 lead but the Lake monsters have fought their way back.

Wilsen Palacios started for the Tigers and gave up just a hit in 4IP. The Tigers and Spinners play the robber game Sunday with Brennan Smith taking the hill for the Tigers. Smith played for CT last year and returns to the Tigers from West Michigan. With the Whitecaps, Smith was 1-3, a 4.99 ERA in 39.2 IP over 9 games.

"Jason King lost his mother to cancer during his senior year of high school. Less than three years later, he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the 2010 season.

All the heartache, pain and misfortune only made King, a switch-hitting third baseman at Kansas State, more determined than ever to live out his dream of playing professional baseball.

In difficult times, King often thought back to his mother's request in her dying days: "Don't mourn my death, put a smile on your face and move forward."

That message was posted on the refrigerator in the family's home in Dublin, Ohio. Carrying out his mom's motto is a big reason King will fulfill his dream later this week when he joins the Detroit Tigers' minor-league system.

King, through it all, kept moving forward. He was selected in the fourth round by Detroit in the recent major league draft. He is expected to begin his pro career Friday with the Connecticut Tigers, a Single-A short-season affiliate.

"I'm proud as hell of him for staring adversity in the face and saying, 'I'm going to win,' " said Jeff King, Jason's father and a former baseball player at Ohio State from 1982-84.

Jason King, who turned 22 on Tuesday, chuckled as he reflected on the start of his pro career.

"I've been pretty much groomed for this from birth," he said.

His dad put a batting cage in the basement of their home and taught his two sons to become switch-hitters from the first day they could swing a bat.

Meanwhile, King's grandfather on his mother's side was a former Ohio State football player. Frank Ellwood played quarterback for legendary coach Woody Hayes in the mid-1950s and later was an assistant on Hayes' staff before becoming the head coach at Marshall.

"I had it coming at me from both sides my whole life," Jason King said, laughing.

The family changed forever in July 2005, when Jason King's mother, Susan, was diagnosed with colon cancer. She died Nov. 7, 2006."

"Detroit— There's a new Kaline in the Tigers organization.

Colin Kaline, selected in the 26th round of the draft last week, has signed a contract, taken a physical and will soon be doing what his Hall of Fame grandfather, Al, never had to do — play minor league baseball.

"He's absolutely thrilled," Al Kaline said Sunday. "He signed right away, went down to Lakeland for his physical and is headed to Connecticut.

"Now I have to figure out a way to go see him play."

An infielder who graduated from Florida Southern College, Colin Kaline will report to the Single A Connecticut Tigers of the New York-Penn League. "

The opener is Friday.

One of his teammates will be Patrick Leyland, son of Tigers manager Jim Leyland.

At Florida Southern, Kaline won an award for being the top male scholar-athlete with a 3.61 grade-point average. His major was human movement and performance.

"COLUMBIA, S.C. — The Huskies arrived at South Carolina's $35 million college baseball palace two wins away from the sport's ultimate destination.

Still, to some they are strangers in paradise.

"Our fans are the same way," George Springer said, when asked if he was "envious" of the lavish facility and the support it suggests for baseball at South Carolina, "but when it's 40 degrees and the wind is blowing and you have to get bundled up for two hours, it's not as much fun for them to watch."

The Huskies, accustomed to playing in front of shivering crowds of perhaps 100 fans at J.O. Christian Field, take their talents to Carolina Baseball Stadium, where there could be as many as 10,000 on hand Saturday night at 6 p.m. for Game 1 of the NCAA super regional against the defending champion South Carolina Gamecocks. The winner of this best-of-three series moves on to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., where no New England school has competed since 1986.

In another battle of aces, Matt Barnes (11-4, 1.62 ERA) will pitch for the Huskies against South Carolina's Michael Roth (12-3. 1.10).

"There are a lot of great players from up where we are," said UConn's LJ Mazzilli, who grew up in Greenwich, "and I think we've shown that if we're all pulling in the same direction, it doesn't matter what stage you put in front of us, we can overcome it."

The Huskies bring the can-do attitude into this series after fighting their way out of the losers bracket to win the Clemson Regional last week, a task that included four wins in three days, the last two over the host school.

"That was a pretty strong statement, right there," said South Carolina coach Ray Tanner. "Arguably, Clemson was the best team in the country the last few weeks. Connecticut was expected to be where they are. They're not just a team that 'got hot at the right time.' They were prognosticated to be one of the teams playing at the end."

Wherever the Huskies go, they are still peppered with questions about the weather back home. To come from a cold-weather climate and advance this deep into the Division I tournament has always seemed impossible — especially to fans from long-dominant warm-weather programs like South Carolina.

"We've shown that we have a lot of mental toughness," UConn coach Jim Penders said.

The challenge, though, ratchets up still higher this week. The Gamecocks, as defending champions, know how to win and most of their players have been this far more than once — this is their coach's ninth super regional in 12 years. Roth, a lefthander who was chosen in the 31st round by the Indians, won April pitching duels against Sonny Gray of Vanderbilt and Alex Meyer of Kentucky, both first-round picks like Barnes.

"I just got to be who I am," said Roth, echoing one of his coach's mantras. Tanner said he does not involve his players too deeply in scouting reports, but just coaches them to do the things they do best. One of those things is holding runners, so UConn probably won't be stealing as many bases as it did last weekend.

Barnes, a first-round pick (19th overall) by the Red Sox, will try to rebound from his worst start of the year, a 13-1 loss to Coastal Carolina to open the Clemson Regional.

"I'm just going to go out and do what I've done all year, go out and try to give us a quality start," Barnes said. "We all understand they have a phenomenal team here."

The Gamecocks (48-14), who beat Stetson to win their regional, are hitting .296 as a team, with 44 home runs, outscoring opponents, 384-199. Their strength is pitching, with Roth and closer Matt Price (63 strikeouts in 48 innings). South Carolina's staff ERA is 2.65.

Springer, picked 11th overall by Houston, has been going easy since tweaking his hamstring rounding second base Monday night, but he practiced with the team on Friday and seemed to be moving fine. The Huskies (45-18-1) have a .311 batting average with 34 homers, outscoring opponents, 421-248, and a team ERA of 3.03.

"I know it sounds like coach-speak," Tanner said, "but Connecticut is really good, and we're going to have to play our best to win.""

Like high school kids showing their acceptance letters, UConn baseball players gathered to monitor theMLB draft on Tuesday and see who was going where.

The Huskies, who were enjoying at day off in Clemson, S.C., before heading across the state to Columbia to begin preparing for the NCAA Super Regional this weekend against South Carolina, were only part of the banner year for Connecticut baseball talent.

Amity's Jason Esposito, the slick-fielding, power hitting third baseman for Vanderbilt, was chosen early in the second round, by theOrioles at No. 64. Esposito's teammate, catcher Curt Casali of New Canaan, was selected by the Tigers in the 10th round, so he may get the chance to begin his pro career close to home, with the Norwich-based Connecticut Tigers of the NY-Penn League.

Ahmed was both a pitcher and an infielder at East Longmeadow, Mass., and chose UConn, in part, because coach Jim Penders was interested in him as a position player. Ahmed has worked occasionally in relief for the Huskies, and many scouts had expressed the opinion that pitching was his strong suit. But Ahmed's stellar play for UConn in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge in Florida in February turned heads.

On April 25, Ahmed was injured in a collision against Quinnipiac and spent two weeks in the hospital with a tube in his chest, waiting for a collapsed lung to heal and seal.

"I was concerned at first," Ahmed said. "But the people I talked to assured me that my injury wasn't a long-term thing and it wouldn't affect the draft at all."

Ahmed returned for the Big East tournament, and he was name to the All-Regional team at shortstop Monday. Braves scouting director Tony Macio was in Clemson to scout Ahmed.

"He's a tough kid," Macio told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. "He played the last [two] weeks in a flak jacket."

The Braves will keep Ahmed, hitting .333 with 35 RBI, at shortstop.

Outfielder John Andreoli, who had a 21-game hitting streak this season, was taken by the Brewers in the 17th round, 519th overall. Greg Nappo, MVP of the Regional, was chosen in the 18th round by the Marlins (553rd); Closer Kevin Vance went to the White Sox in the 19th round, (591st); Nemeth, the slugging first baseman, went to the Brewers in the 21st round (641st) and reliever David Fischer went to the Giants in the 30th round (927th).

In addition to Esposito and Vanderbilt, other state players from out-of-state colleges who were picked include Montville's Taylor Lewis, centerfielder from Maine, who was taken by the Pirates in the 10th round (302nd), and Stratford's Dan Paolini, second baseman at Siena, went to the Mariners with the next pick. Wallingford's Tyler Mizenko, a righthander at Winthrop, went to the Giants in the 28th.

Among state high school players, Southington pitcher Sal Romano, who intends to go to Tennessee, was taken in the 23rd round by the Reds, who could try to entice him away from college.

Yale pitcher Brook Hart was taken by the Rockies in the 23rd round and UConn-Avery Point pitcher Sean Donatello went to the Marlins in the 25th.

Dunedin (Fla.) High shortstop Casey Turgeon, who has committed to Florida, was drafted in the 22nd round by the Mets. Turgeon's brother is former UConn player Erik Turgeon, now a reliever with the Binghamton Mets of the Eastern League. His uncle Dave was a UConn assistant in 2004-05 and now manages State College (Pa.) of the New York-Penn League. Erik's and Casey's father is Steve Turgeon, who played in the Cardinals system. Steve, Dave and their brother Mike are from Groton. Dave and Mike also played in the minors.

The final day of the draft is Wednesday with Rounds 31-50.

"George Springer, UConn's five-tool center fielder, was taken by the Houston Astros with the 11th pick in the Major League Baseball amateur draft on Monday night.

Matt Barnes, UConn's ace pitcher, was selected by the Red Sox with the 19th pick.

Springer, 21, from New Britain and Avon Old Farms, is UConn's all-time home run leader with 45. He is also a base-stealing artist and a rangy center fielder with an above average arm.

Expected to be picked high, Springer, 6 feet 3, 200 pounds, was invited to MLB Network headquarters for their coverage of the first round, but UConn had other plans, advancing to the NCAA Regional. Springer and UConn were playing Clemson in the regional final Monday night as the draft was going on.

Springer took a .350 average with 12 homers and 76 RBI into the game, with an on-base-plus-slugging mark of 1.086. He was drafted in the 48th round by the Twins three years ago, but chose to attend UConn.

Barnes, who turns 21 on June 17, was 11-3 with a 1.12 ERA for UConn going into the NCAA tournament, but his last start was not a good one, allowing seven earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in a loss to Coastal Carolina to raise his ERA to 1.62 with 111 strikeouts in 116 innings. However, scouts had been flocking to his starts all year and consistently listed him among the top pitchers in a draft pool considered unusually deep in college pitching talent.

Barnes, 6-4 and 215, reached 97 mph with his fastball, even after passing the 100-pitch mark in games. UConn coaches did not allow him to throw more than 113 pitches in a game this season, so he came through his junior year with apparently good arm health.

Barnes, who was not drafted out of Bethel High, is the third UConn pitcher to be drafted in the first round, following Colin McLaughlin (Blue Jays , 1980) and Charles Nagy (Indians, 1988). Scott Burrell, a basketball player at UConn, was drafted as a pitcher by the Jays in 1989."
