Thoughts and pictures of my local minor league baseball team the New York Penn League Connecticut Tigers; a Detriot farm team. We'll still be looking at former Navigators/Defenders players along the way....

Send Chris Begg to Fresno now......

He's got nothing left to prove here. Yes I know he didn't do well last time up but that was then and this is now.
He killed the RockCats today pitching 7 innings, 6 hits allowed, 6 Ks, no runs and no walks. That makes 14 innings in the last 7 days against New Britain without giving up a run and about 20+ straight shut out innings over the last three starts. Chris is 2-0 with a 2.10 ERA now. Bring up Adam Cowart and see what he's all about.

This was an easy 6-1 Defender victory. Brian Horwitz goes 3-5 (2B, 2R, now at .371), Simon Klink 3 for 4, .327 and John Bowker 2 for 4, .309 were the hitting stars. RockCats gave up 4 easy runs in the first and with Begg on the mound that's all she wrote. Jeff Petersen pitched the final two innings.

Misc fan nots: I have a vidclip of Hortwitz getting an infield hit in the 8th I'll post on Sunday. Brian hit one deep in the left center power alley I'm sure would have been out in some parks.

Jake Wald batted leadoff and got the 4 run first going with a lead off walk.He later picked up a RBI. He might not hit much but Jake's got a nice glove out there especially with a ground ball pitcher like Begg on the hill.

A 4:05 start for the game (a first) didn't seem to add to the crowd total.

The only way I see this happening is for the Giants to (1) take Threets out of the Fresno rotation and (2) to keep Pat Misch in the bullpen. Number 1 is, to me, the obvious choice. but the Giants don't seem ready to walk away from all that potential. Number 2 is tougher, because I'm a big Pat Misch fan and I think he can be a major league starter, especially if reports that he's added a cutter are true. A third possibility is a Lincecum call-up, but for who on a first place team?

Chris, unfortunately, is caught in a numbers game. He deserves a shot a Triple A, but I don't see it happening unless a current Frisco starter falls by the wayside.

The thing I don't want to see is Chris moving up and Threets coming here as a starter. Threets starting and four hour games could become a common fit.

Well, to add to the issue, looks like the Giants have a new starter in Fresno named Bowles. Looks like a career minor leaguer. 31 years old, last year in Ottawa. Several interesting conclusions can be drawn from this scenario.

Oh God, please don't send Threets back here. A 4 hour game ?.... and that's with him getting shelled in the third. His next stop s/b back to the bullpen or the player to be named later.

Brian Bowles 10-10 LY with Ottawa 3.23 ERA, 30 games, 26 starts 156 IP 156 hits allowed 78 Ks 52 BBs
