Thoughts and pictures of my local minor league baseball team the New York Penn League Connecticut Tigers; a Detriot farm team. We'll still be looking at former Navigators/Defenders players along the way....

Defs comeback again and beat the Rockcats 6-4

today. The big blow was a Carlos Sosa 3 run homer in the 8th inning, his 8th, to put the Defs up 5-4.
John Bowker added a solo shot, his 20th, for insurance in the 9th. Brooks McNiven gets the win and Brian Anderson picks up save #27.

Anderson pitched well today. Is it me or is Jake Wald pretty good defensvely? Brooks quietly put together a great ERA this year.

A nice stadium blanket giveaway today in NB. Last stand at Dodd this week. I'll try to make the entire series. Can't believe the season is over, It seems like yesterday the team season opener countdown clock was at 60 days.

Good playoff race shaping up in the Defenders division with New Hampshire and Portland trying to place second for a post season spot against Trenton. CT plays NH and NB plays Portland, so the local teams can play the role of spoiler, which is the next best thing to making it.

Tuesday is a doubleheader by the way- 6:05 start. If you don't have tickets yet mention wtic tonight- you get a seat for a buck, grandstand is free I think. If anyone who knows me needs seats for the last few games I'll have a couple left over if you need them, plus my all star stub is kicking around somewhere.

I hope we could get some people in the stands and give these kids a good sendoff. I've had a good time watching the games, and the only real bummer this year was losing Machemer. Everything else has been great. We're pretty lucky to have two AA teams within driving distance.

NB gate totals are at 316,000 with a Red Sox affiliate series remaining. The Twins aren't exactly a popular team around here, so those numbers are quite impressive. With all weeknight games left I hope the Defenders will break 200,000, although it ain't likely.

I'll leave the game summary to Greg, but this was a day when the key word surrounding Defender baseball was "STUPID!"

Stupid #1 I No sooner sat down wnen a Def employee brought me up to date on some player moves. To Fresno...Sadler and Palmer. Guess Matt needed a spot start last Saturday. To Norwich, 2 pitchers..unnamed from Augusta.

Stupid # 2 As the game started, I looked to see which Defs were charting the game. It was GB and, lo and behold, Dave Mckae. As soon as i got a chance I said to Dave, "Thought you were in Fresno." With a chuckle, he replied, "It was a mistake."

The Giants have got to be the most convoluted organization in the history of baseball. I'm pretty sure the Sadler/Palmer mess has something to do with the Sept call-ups, but the whole deal is insane.

Not to be undone, the Def's joined in the fracas with Stupid #3. Bottom of the 8th, tie game, Ruiz leads off with a single. Webb comes in to P/R, and VonSchell is up, attempting to bunt. After two failed attempts, I figure he'll hit away. WRONG. A third attempt is fouled off for a strike out. Anyone want to take a stab at when was the last time Tyler attempted to bunt.

There's more, minor type stuff, but these are the highlights. All we need for one of the three remaing dates is a between innings visit from the keystone kops.

Good night Gracie!
