Cold, ugly loss tonight to the Thunder 4-1
as Connecticut drops it's sixth game in a row. Defs starter Joe Martinez and one time Yankee Chase Wright dueled for the first five innings until Connecticut broke through in the sixth for a 1-0 lead. A one out single by Antoan Richardson was followed by a Ben Copeland single to right field. Richardson easily made it to third but the throw to third was cut off in the infield and Copeland was caught between first and second and tagged out in the run down. Travis Denker walked and TI hit a dying quail behind second on the infield that the second baseman flipped to the shortstop for the force but Denker's slide was ahead of it allowing Richardson to come in for a short lived 1-0 Connecticut lead.
Kevin Pichardo came in for Martinez in the 7th and walked the first batter he saw. An infield bleeder to second and another walk loaded the bases with no outs. Next batter..a walk forcing in the tying run. On comes Ronnie Ray who pitches his way out of it with a infield pop up, a called third strike (lousy call) and another K.
Ray comes on in the 8th and the wheels come off the wagon. A leadoff infield grounder to Maroul at third, who has little chance of getting the runner out at first, turns into a single and throwing error and a runner on second. Next batter hits a grounder to Denker and the ball rolls up his arm out into right field as the runner on second scores for a 2-1 Thunder lead. Next batter Cody Ehlers homers to right center, 4-1 and that's the ball game.
Misc fan notes: Martinez pitched well and we wished he came out for the 7th. Chase Wright's body language when runners get on is lousy for lack of a better word. He seems to scuff around, walk off the mound, the catcher and third baseman talk to him but hey he's 4-1 on the year better than anyone on CT. Pichardo had nothing tonight, second outing like that in a row. Five hits on the night for CT and you get the feeling that once this team falls behind it's over.
Shane Turner in the house for the SF Giants. Brooks McNivens sent out to Fresno and the radio guys said Paul Oseguera starts Wednesday for the Defs in his 2008 debut.
Way too cold and windy at Dodd tonight for April 29th.
Pic is Chase Wright.
