Thoughts and pictures of my local minor league baseball team the New York Penn League Connecticut Tigers; a Detriot farm team. We'll still be looking at former Navigators/Defenders players along the way....

Greg,
Never been to Norwich but Joe's article and other read on this site make me think that the City leadership needs to lead. A new ball field sould have been one of the 1st on the things to do list in the revitalization of the downtown area. Shortly after the City's vision statement in 2002 construction should have began and the city should have secured the tenent and built it. That would have been a big welcome matt put out to the baseball world and attracted other business to help in the revitalization process. Resodding the field and improveing the bathrooms and fighting over who is going to pay for moving the fences or pay for this or that If baseball leaves Norwich it will be because the City failed in having the forsite and not because of the weather. Just my take on it from what I have read from miles away.

Bottom line is you need to put fans in the stands that are willing to spend a few bucks. Free tickets to folks that aren't going to spend a dime once inside doesn't do anybody any good. in my estimation it is feasible that attendance could be increased significantly WITHOUT giving out free tickets to boost the numbers.

The defenders are a great bargain and good baseball- someone needs to hammer that message home to the buying public.

The reality is that winning baseball puts butts in seats.
At all levels of progressive ball studs at the prior level will fail unless they adjust. The guys who make to the next level all hit for average with good on base percentage. guys can hit with all the pop in the world or steal lots of bases but if your batting average is below 250 you are going to have a hard time staying on the field never mind getting promoted.
losing is contagious and people dont want to watch a game where the players behave like they dont care. As for the stadium, yes its in the middle of nowhere, but it has a beautiful view from every seat, plenty of parking, and reasonably priced concessions.
If the team chooses to leave in the next couple of years, consideration should be given to maybe becoming a single A team, short season, or rookie leauge team. It would eliminate the weather issue, reduce overhead, and reduce travel.
As always just my opinion. Bill
