Thoughts and pictures of my local minor league baseball team the New York Penn League Connecticut Tigers; a Detriot farm team. We'll still be looking at former Navigators/Defenders players along the way....

Matt Palmer signed by the Angels....

to a minor league deal and the former Navigator/Defender is invited to the Angles MLB spring training. Tip of the hat to Hondo for picking up on this transaction (see comments under Pablo's pic).

Matt Palmer, what more can we say about this guy. He nearly tops the list of nicest players I've ever met through me 8+ seasons at Dodd despite being around 12 or 13 when he pitched here. I happen to have this very ironic memory of him a while back when he was in the 'pen with the, then Navigators, I believe. I brought my friend to the game and we were sitting front row right next to the Defenders 'pen. There was a foul ball that ended up finding its way down the first base line and near the 'pen so Matt Palmer picked up and give my friend his first AA baseball ever. I find it Ironic that my friend Lived(s) on Palmer Drive. I also remember a time during the season he got called up to Fresno, when he was set to pitch on NESN vs the Portland Sea Dogs. I got all excited and all, but it turns out that Palmer had been called up prior to the game, leaving some A-ball scrub to start in his place. Any of you guys have fond memories of R.D. Spiehs*

I worked a baseball camp sponsored by Navs and Matt came up to talk to the kids. Super nice!
I remember him telling me he was doing alot of road work(running)on his off days to try to shed a few pounds. He said the humid summers didn't bother him b/c he grew up in Missouri(I think). Anyway friendly young man...wish him the best

Best memory of pitcher R.D. Spiehs was he was sent to the plate as a pitch hitter in the home half of the 16th inning and worked a walk to force home the winning run for a 3-2 Defs win on 6/30/06.

Great comments about Matt!

hey greg....big news...you guys are getting a new manager and pitching coach

new manager...steve decker...rising managerial star in the giants org

new pitching coach...ross grimsley...as augusta pitching coach, his staff were consistently amongst the tops in the sally league

seems stanley was offered the position in augusta...but chose to leave the org and is now with the usa training centers

not sure why stanley would be demoted...gonna miss him

Knoedler on the move again. Signed by the Cards and will have invite to spring training. A's must have let him go. Hope this guy gets a legit shot somewhere. Always liked his game.

Hey Bacci

Has it been announced in writing about Decker , Grimsley, and Steamer. I'm really surprised about Stanley, he was so well respected by the players and many swore by him. Don't know much about Grimsley, but given that staff he had in Lo A last year, any one of us could have bee pitching coach.

Sucks to hear that about Bob Stanley. If I had my way we'd still have Machemer and Bob.

is it just me, or will this be Ross Grismley's second different stint at Dodd Stadium. Is he a relative of former-MLB pitcher Jason Grimsley?

There's an article about Jesus Guzman on the baseball america website (he may end up here in CT).

On a sad note the hawaii winter ball league folded. I realize Hawaii is a laid back place, but the marketing approach was absolutley horrid. They had top notch talent from the US and Japan (and honolulu is packed with Japanese), but they didn't get anyone in the stands. I'm really regretting not going this year, now more than ever.

terrible news about the hawaii winter league

great place for american players to learn how to hit breaking stuff...cuz that is what the japanese mostly throw...i know it helped nate

and bad news for scouts

the economy is sure taking its toll

Yes it's the second go around for Ross. I'm sure sure if he's related to Jason.
Good news about Decker! And even as a Yankee fan I'm going to miss Steamer.
Sad news about the HI league. I agree with LC about the marketing of that.

hondo,

ya...the stuff on the changes in coaching are now official

the loss of stanley is as confusing to me as the losses of trevor wilson and lenn sakata

if i had been gm, stanley would be my choice to take over for rags...who shoulda been let go at years end...but i dont run the team

you guys will like decker...he is definitely being fast tracked, and should be with the big club within the next couple of years (depending on who the new gm and manager are after another terrible season)

as for grimsley...ya, last year he didnt need to do alot of work, but look at his squads from past seasons...he has molded alot of fine talent
