I been watching the DVD set of "Sports Night"....
and one show touched on the Bobby Thompson homer. That's Ernie Harwell and Red Barber with Russ Hodges' famous call.
Thoughts and pictures of my local minor league baseball team the New York Penn League Connecticut Tigers; a Detriot farm team. We'll still be looking at former Navigators/Defenders players along the way....

I was in the Winsted, Ct YMCA lobby listening to the game on the radio when Thomson hit the HR. It made me late for basketball practice, so I had to run laps, ten as I recall. Ran everyone with a big smile on my face.
Something not mentioned often is how much criticism Dressen took for taking Newcombe out for Branca in the ninth. Many experts strongly believed (to this day) if Newcombe stayed in the game, the Dodgers win.

They claim Thompson knew what was coming.

On the "Sports Night" episode the character, a sports reporter, who was at the game missed seeing the homer because he was in the mens's room. He though he had enough time to get back to to press box because Branca always took forever to warm up but on that day he warmed up faster. Don't know how true that is about Branca or whether it was made up for TV.

I met Thomson in Albany a few years ago and asked him if he knew what was coming. He said no and if he had, he would never have hit the ball.
