Thoughts and pictures of my local minor league baseball team the New York Penn League Connecticut Tigers; a Detriot farm team. We'll still be looking at former Navigators/Defenders players along the way....

Hey Greg,
Read your blog all the time, first time commenting.

Just wanted to mention something. There's a lot to be said for the great guy that is Defenders' outfielder Antoan Richardson. He may not be the greatest hitter on the field, but what impresses me more is his off-the-field behavior.

Antoan is one of the guys that will always take the time (and frequently even go out of his way) to sign an autograph or pose for a picture with kids. He is a great example for the little ones. That's unfortunately not something you see very often anymore in the game of baseball. Don't get me wrong, there are some great guys in the game, but there are some not-so-nice guys, too.

I had the pleasure of meeting AR last August after a game outside the locker room, and he stopped for a picture and signed some autographs then, too.

To end the second game on Sunday, AR was running at second base. After the final out was recorded, me and my friend Kenny (dfensfan on this site) got up to leave the stadium, when all of a sudden I heard my name behind me. I turned around and there's AR, motioning for me to come on down. I went down to the field with Kenny, and we chatted with AR for a few minutes; he said he saw us sitting in the stands and wanted to see how we were doing. Not only did he take the time to talk to us fans, but he initiated the conversation himself after having an 0-for-2 day with a botched play in center.

Can't wait to chat with him some more the next homestand. Truly a class act.

Hi James,

There is another viewer on the blog who has had the same experiences with AR as you.
It's great to hear that about a player these days with all the bad stuff going on we see about pro player in the papers these days. It's why we're so lucky to have this type of an asset in our own backyard.

Well said, James. Antoan is pro player and a pro person. The kindness he has shown me and my family, is extraordinary.
He is just one of those guys that makes everyone he comes in contact with feel important and special.
He's very easy to root for! Go Flash!

Although I'm not happy about the addition of the 5th outfielder.
