Yankees soured on Vic Powers and Elston became their first black player on the MLBB level.

The "story" is supposedly he was moved to KC because he was dating a White lady. Don't have a clue if it's true or not, but I don't believe he was what the Yankees wanted at first base either. He was a good fielder, carried a decent average, played the game the right way, but had no power. Moose had the power then. I never believed his social life had anything to with it only because it was New York, not Biloxi.

That's the word as well according to Roy White in his book. Yanks were looking for the right guy to break their color line both on and off the field.
